Jere Whitson Elementary School

“Author Day” at Jere Whitson Elementary School was tons of fun. I shared stories from Tennessee history with teachers and students in grades K-4, who morphed from Cherokee Indians into Elvis fans over the course of 200 years. If your school is looking for an author, contact me at jenni[email protected]

Cookeville Senior Citizens Center

I had a great time chatting with the folks at the Cookeville Senior Citizens Center about my life as a newspaper columnist. We also enjoyed wonderful music by Cumberland Connection and a delicious covered dish lunch. Thanks to center director Maxine Frasier for the kind invitation. If your civic or social group is looking for a speaker, contact me at [email protected]

Maury County Children’s Library

What a fun evening with kids and teens who pretended to be on the grueling four-month-long Donelson river voyage of 1779-1780!  We journeyed all the way from Fort Patrick Henry in east Tennessee to Fort Nashborough, enduring freezing weather, smallpox, near-starvation, and attacks by Dragging Canoe’s Chickamauga warriors.  During the 68 days the boats were icebound, children amused themselves by playing checkers, marbles, and jacks (as pictured here).
